As employees, we all play a crucial role in safeguarding our company's security. One of the simplest and most effective ways to do this is by using strong, unique passwords. But do you know what a good password entails? Official guidance from the US government’s cyber defense agency, CISA, says that a strong password will be long, with at least 16 characters, but even longer is better. A good password will also be random – which means mixing uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. If you need something easier to remember, you can also use a passphrase that includes 4 to 7 random words. Finally, a strong password must be used for only one account. This prevents cyber criminals from using one stolen password to access another system that uses the same one – for example, by using your email password to log onto your office’s HR system. The best passwords will probably be hard to remember – but this problem can be solved by using any of dozens of password managers now built into web browsers or available as standalone apps.
